Hey nice post.
About the Volkswagen Phaeton, can you believe it's nothing more then a reskinned Bentley Continental GT? Sad, but true.
The VW Phaeton was a unimaginable fail in my opinion!

<a href="http://www.whatnottodrive.com/2010/02/vw-phaeton-hey-volkswagen-you-were-kiddin-right/" rel="nofollow">Its Official: VW Phaeton is a total flop!</a>

Yes, the science wasn't perfect but regarding your criticism:

- command structure: international private consortium build the ship and hired the crew, so you can't compare the command structure to the US military. and it's the future, things can change a lot in 50 years.
- we don't know enough about the bombs to judge the radiation or emp radius (could be pure fusion explosive).
- the pusher plate seems fine to me. with the right materials and bombs it could work.

all in all i think the Phaeton is, for a tv series, a very realistic space ship, at least the exterior. we (the human race) could built something like it by 2050 (at least for interplanetary travel), if we'd really want to.

i mean with a 5% budget (currently it's 0.5% of the federal budget), 2 decades and no political restrictions (partial test ban treaty etc.) NASA could most likely travel to mars in a matter of weeks instead of 9 months. it's just economics and politics that hold us back (at least for interplanetary travel).

Nice official diagrams of the Phaeton can be found here:

I might add that when walking in a rotating section of a space craft - to simulate gravity - you walk on the outer wall, not on the spoke inner wall, Jesus Christ !!
